Officially opened in 1981 with the twofold aim to "create value to the book and archivist heritage" of the Jewish Community of Venice and to "give a full execution to the will of heirs of late Renato Maestro", the library means to contribute to spread the knowledge of the Jewish civilization and culture and particularly of the Jews in Venice and in Italy. Thanks to the contribution of the Veneto Region, it has found, in 1991, a new modern arrangement in the building near the Jewish Museum , thus integrating in the panorama of the Venetian libraries.

The library offers to scholars and specialists any assistance for archive research and for the elaboration of university dissertations, putting on disposition its section of history, religion, fiction, the almost 600 archive files (scheduled with the contribution of the Municipality of Venice, of the Veneto Region and of the Archive superintendence for the Veneto Region), many periodicals, a rich lot of ancient books, a consistent videotheque,
