silence and the persecution of the Jews in the Second World War

NATURE OF ACTIVITY: animated reading

THEME: silence and the persecution of the Jews in the Second World War

DURATION: 1½ hours

TARGET SCHOOLS: 4th and 5th level primary school classes

DESCRIPTION:

The text reading will be preceded by games suggested to the children to introduce the idea of silence. The conductor will then read from an illustrated book aided by the images for the children to enjoy during the story. After the reading the children will be encouraged to reflect on the story of the persecution of the Jews and the part played by silence in the events they have just heard about.  While silence in this case might have meant salvation, in other circumstances a conspiracy of silence could mean death.

AIMS:

  • to introduce the children to the vicissitudes of the Jews under the Nazi regime
  • to familiarise the children with recent history and make them aware how the choices made by individuals can influence the unfolding of historical events.
  • to narrow the gap between past and present so as to stimulate reflection on how the choices of individuals or groups can bear on the options of everyone.

We take this opportunity of thanking Giuntina publishing for allowing us to use Jennifer Elvgen and Fabio Santomauro’s picture book The Whispering Town / La città che sussurrò.

Cost: €90 up to 15 students, €5 for each extra student

Educational activities are designed for a minimum of 15 students per class up to a maximum of 25 students. 2 accompanying adults are allowed free entry, plus carers, where appropriate, for small or disabled children and those with learning difficulties.
